Refinishing

Whether you purchased a scarred and marred table from a junk store, yard sale, swap meet or found it in the days trash, with a few good supplies and a little time, you will turn that junk, into your very own piece of treasure. To refinish a wooden table, you will need, at least, these top 6 supplies.

6. Electric Sander

Depending on the size of the table, an electric sander will certainly make for faster work. Electric sanders come in the belt and circular variety, as well as, a few smaller hand held brands. None of these will work better than any other, but you will want to make sure the sander accommodates normal sheets of sandpaper and not a special branded variety. The more intricate the sandpaper, the higher the consumer cost.

The first thing to do is thoroughly inspect the piece of furniture to determine if it is worth trying to restore to it’s original wood tone. Most of the time, it is much easier to paint and you can make the piece of furniture look brand new with a little wood filler and some sand paper.

Now take your sander with a heavy grit sandpaper (60 to 80 grit) and go over the ENTIRE surface thoroughly. If you are painting the piece, do not get too caught up in making sure every ounce of paint is off of the furniture piece and skip step 3. If you are staining, go to step 3.

1. Determine the condition of your hardwood floor(HF) – ( if your HF was carpeted over, make sure you pull all the staples and all the nails out; also a bad condition of your HF would be when it is full of holes and cracks – which you would have to fill with a wood filler (.50 from HD) that matches your HF. Apply it with your finger(s) – the best, or a putty knife.

2. Rent a Orbital Sender and 5 send paper for it of different corses (for exemple “40″ , 60, 80, 100 – is the finest) – everything ~0

3. If your HF has many deep dents and the verry surface is “rooted” than you would have to start with # 40 sand paper ( rent about 5 to 10 for an area of 1000-2000 sq ft.). For a room of 15 x 15 sq ft, it shouldn’t take you more than 10 min to sand with sand paper #40. Note again that # 40 is only for a bad condition HF).

4. Do the same thing with sand paper # 60, 80 and 100 (mandatorry)

5. After all areas with HF you wanted to refinish are sanded, wipe the area with a damp towel (rinsed often) to wipe off all the dust. Let the surface dry (1-2 hours), so the HF won’t be wet before applying Polyurethane lacquer.

If you’ve shopped for new kitchen cabinets recently, you know that it’s often much more economical to refinish your old cabinets than to buy new ones. Here are 8 tips that will make your kitchen cabinet refinishing a huge success.

1. If your cabinets are painted, remove the paint with a chemical stripper. If your cabinets are stained or varnished, either clean the surface well or remove most of the stain or varnish with a chemical refinisher.

2. Take the doors off your cabinets and remove the handles and hardware. It will be much easier if you lay the doors flat to work on them.

3. Check to see how much damage there is to the cabinets. If there is only minor damage, such as dark stains around the door handles, just clean these areas. Use a synthetic steel wool pad because it won’t hurt your fingers or get caught on the wood grain.
